MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Greater Essex County Section of the National Council of Negro Women!

It is both an honor and a responsibility to serve as President of this growing and purpose-driven Section. The Greater Essex County Section was established with a clear and intentional vision: to plant roots in Newark, Irvington, and Maplewood while building strong infrastructure that will sustain service, leadership, and sisterhood for generations to come.

We are a newly chartered Section, and we are proud of that. Building something meaningful requires patience, clarity, collaboration, and courage. From the beginning, we have committed ourselves to transparency, thoughtful governance, and collective leadership. We are not simply organizing events—we are building a framework that supports Black women, strengthens families, and creates lasting impact in our communities.

Our work is grounded in the core pillars of NCNW:

  • Education – literacy, academic empowerment, and lifelong learning

  • Health Equity – maternal health, mental health, and wellness initiatives

  • Economic Empowerment – entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and wealth-building

  • Social Justice – advocacy, outreach, and grassroots impact

We believe that when Black women are informed, supported, and connected to opportunity, families thrive and communities transform.

Whether you reside in Newark, Irvington, or Maplewood—or work in, grew up in, or simply carry a heart for these communities—there is space for you here. Our Section welcomes women who are ready to plant roots, build infrastructure, and contribute their gifts in meaningful ways.

As we continue to grow, we remain committed to:

  • Clear communication
  • Accountable leadership
  • Strong partnerships
  • Intergenerational mentorship
  • And a sisterhood rooted in respect and integrity

The legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune reminds us that organized women are powerful women. Our task is not only to serve today, but to build systems that endure.

Thank you for visiting our page. If you feel called to this work, we would love to connect with you.

In sisterhood and service,

Victoria Juste-Henry, LSW, LMSW
